History

The Women’s Health DPG began in 1994 under the name of the Perinatal Nutrition DPG.  In 1999, the name was changed to the Women & Reproductive Nutrition DPG since it was thought that Perinatal had to do with neonates and should come under the Pediatrics DPG.  In 2003 Health was added to the title. In 2007, the current name was established so as to encompass all aspects of women's health and nutrition, and not give the impression that the focus of the DPG was only the child-bearing years.

Women’s Health members address women's health and nutrition issues relative to the life stages that are unique to women including preconception, prenatal, postpartum, lactation and menopause. Members provide health and nutrition education for healthy women of reproductive age and deliver medical nutrition therapy to women with reproductive or medical complications. Nutrition interventions have the potential to improve the health of women and their children, and reduce both pregnancy complications and lifelong disease risk. Benefits of membership include a quarterly newsletter, the Women’s Health Report, which contains cutting-edge articles and professional practice tips. Members also enjoy continuing professional education and networking sessions at national and state conferences. Alliances and partnerships with obstetric, perinatology and women's health groups create a vast network for professional growth and personal development. Finally, the Web site, Facebook site, and electronic mailing list allow members to freely exchange ideas, explore career pathways and to communicate electronically.
